Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

LIONS TOP OAKWOOD 76-75 FOR FIRST WIN

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team recorded its first win of the 2017-18 season in dramatic fashion Thursday evening. A floater by Adrian Smith with 8.7 seconds remaining gave the Lions a 76-75 lead over Oakwood and the Ambassadors missed a shot as time expired to give UNA the home win. The victory gives North Alabama a 1-2 record on the year.

In a game featuring 22 lead changes, including eight over the final 5:43 of playing time, Oakwood (4-7) grabbed a 75-74 advantage on two free throws by Michael Middleton with 20.7 seconds to play. Smith got the ball on the right wing and drove to the basket before pulling up from 12 feet out and connecting.

Oakwood's Ollie Felps got a contested look with four seconds remaining. His shot, however, was off the mark and Kendarius Smtih corralled the defensive rebound as time expired to secure the win.

Sharwyn McGee led all players with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Lions. It was the first double-double of the season for a UNA player. Kendall Stafford added 17 points while Jeff Hodge connected on four three-point baskets and finished with 13 points for UNA.

The two teams entered the half tied at 40-40 before the Lions turned up the defensive pressure over the final 20 minutes. After shooting 50 percent in the first half, Oakwood went 10-of-30 from the floor after the break. The Ambassadors finished with 17 turnovers on the night.

North Alabama finished the game shooting 46.6 percent on 27-of-58 shooting. The Lions held a 37-34 rebounding edge.

UNA will host Cumberland on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
