LIONS EVEN RECORD WITH 97-75 WIN OVER CUMBERLAND

FLORENCE – Five players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team evened its overall record at 2-2 on the year with a 97-75 home win over Cumberland Sunday afternoon at Flowers Hall. UNA shot 58.1 percent from the floor, including 11 three-point baskets on the day.
 
Tavaras Tolliver led the way with 23 points for the Lions. The junior from Scottsboro also added team-high numbers in rebounds (eight) and assists (five). For the game, UNA held a commanding 43-22 rebounding with 11 offensive boards leading to 13 second-chance points.
 
North Alabama led by as many as 17 in the first half before Cumberland rallied before the break. A 10-2 Phoenix run made the score 49-40 at the half.
 
In the second half, the visitors continued to cut into the lead, scoring seven straight points to make the score 49-47 with 18:22 remaining. A basket in the point by Sharwyn McGee ended the UNA drought and started a 13-3 run by the Lions to push the lead back to double digits. The Phoenix could get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
 
After a dunk by Cumberland's Ty Sean Powell cut the lead to 86-73 at the 4:22 mark, the Phoenix would not connect from the field again.
 
McGee finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. Adrian Smith was 3-for-3 from three-point range and added 16 points on the day. Kendall Stafford had 15 points while Trenton Clayton rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 12 points.
 
Andrew Rogan led Cumberland (3-4) with 18 points.
 
UNA will host Carver College on Monday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
