UNA MEN BLAST MONTEVALLO 100-63

MONTEVALLO – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team recorded its first Gulf South Conference victory in impressive fashion Saturday with a 100-63 win at Montevallo. Three UNA players topped 20 points in scoring as the Lions improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in GSC play.

Kendarius Smith came off the bench to lead all scorers with 25 points for UNA. He was 9-of-16 shooting from the floor, including six three-point baskets. Jeff Hodge also connected on six three-pointers, going 6-of-7 from long range in a 22-point effort. Trenton Clayton also came off the bench and added 20 points, all in the paint for North Alabama.

UNA started fast, scoring the game's first 10 points and never giving up the lead. Two free throws by Hodge was followed by a pair of three-pointers to give the Lions an 8-0 advantage in the first three minutes of play. A basket by Kendall Stafford made the score 10-0 before Montevallo got on the board with a free throw. The Falcons did not connect from the floor until the 13:11 mark, starting the game 0-for-6 from the field with three turnovers.

The Lions led 46-25 at the break after holding the home team to 30 percent shooting with no three-point baskets.

The game included a 22-minute delay in the opening two minutes of the second half when UNA guard Tavaras Tolliver was injured while driving to the basket. The junior from Scottsboro hit the floor and had to be taken off the court by a stretcher. He was taken to a local hospital.

UNA led 49-27 at the time of the injury. Sharwyn McGee hit one of two free throws in place of Tavaras and Hodge followed on the ensuing UNA possession with another trey to give the Lions a 26-point lead. The Falcons would get no closer than 21 the rest of the way.

After a Montevallo free throw cut the lead to 60-39 with 14:05 remaining, UNA responded with a 23-8 run to but the game out of reach. The Lions' largest lead came in the closing minute when a basket by Luke Scott made the score 100-60.

McGee added a double-double for UNA with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Adrian Smith also had nine points, six assists and three steals on the night for the Lions. Jeremiah Curtis led Montevallo (5-4 overall, 1-1 GSC) with 14 points.

UNA out-rebounded the Falcons 43-32 and held an 18-8 advantage in second-chance points. The Lions also forced 17 turnovers that led to 27 points.

North Alabama will begin a three-game home stretch next Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against Martin Methodist. The Lions will return to GSC play the following week with home games against Shorter and Lee.
