LATE RUN LIFTS LIONS PAST MARTIN METHODIST

FLORENCE – Jeff Hodge scored a career-high 25 points and Kendall Stafford added a double-double as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team improved to 6-3 on the season with a 78-56 home win over Martin Methodist on Saturday. Hodge, a senior from Birmingham, was 8-of-12 from the floor, including seven three-point baskets.
 
UNA led by as many as 13 in the first half before the RedHawks closed the period with an 11-6 run. The Lions took a 38-30 lead into the break.
 
Martin Methodist scored the first six points of the second half to cut the deficit to two. North Alabama led 43-40 with 16:03 remaining before going on a 13-3 run to stretch the lead to double-digits. Hodge capped the run with a three-pointer from the left wing. He was fouled on the shot and finished the four-point play with a free throw to give the Lions a 56-43 lead.
 
The RedHawks got within nine with 6:52 to play before UNA scored 14 straight points to put the game away. Five different players scored during the run. Kevin Ndahiro's basket gave the Lions a 76-53 lead at the 1:34 mark.
 
UNA held a 55-34 rebounding advantage and scored 16 second-chance points. Stafford led all players with 16 rebounds. His 15 points also gave him his second double-double of the season.
 
Kendarius Smith added 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Lions while Sharwyn McGee rounded out the top performers with 10 rebounds.
 
UNA will return to Gulf South Conference play on Dec. 14 against Shorter. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
