UNA OUTLASTS WOLVES IN OVERTIME

CARROLLTON, Ga., – North Alabama got a three-point play at the end of regulation, then outscored West Georgia 17-10 in overtime to come away with a 99-92 road victory Saturday in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. The win gives UNA a 9-7 overall record and 4-5 mark in GSC play.

Kendarius Smith led all scorers with 27 points for the Lions. His basket and free throw with 11.9 seconds remaining tied the game at 82-82 to set up overtime. The junior from Camden, Miss., then scored eight points in the extra period as North Alabama escaped with the win.

UNA led 40-29 at the break and led by as many as 15 over the final 20 minutes of play. A three-point basket by Kendall Stafford in the opening minute of the second half gave the Lions a 43-29 lead.

After UWG pulled to within two at the 15:40 mark, the Lions were able to reclaim a double-digit advantage. Sharwyn McGee scored eight points during an 11-2 run as UNA claimed a 58-47 lead with 12:03 remaining. McGee, however, fouled out at the 6:04 mark. Trenton Clayton and Adrian Smith also fouled out of the contest, leaving the Lions with eight roster players.

West Georgia made its move with 10:56 remaining, using a 14-3 run to tie the score at 63-63. A basket at the 6:31 mark gave the Wolves their first lead of the game at 65-63. The home team led by as many as five down the stretch and held an 81-77 lead with 27 seconds remaining.

Two free throws by Kendarius Smith cut the lead to two before UWG's William Sides hit one of two foul shots to make the score 82-79 with 18.5 seconds to play. Smith made his move on the ensuing possession, driving the right side of the lane and connecting on the runner after getting fouled.

West Georgia had two shots in the final seconds after grabbing an offensive rebound. Neither, however, went in, setting up overtime. The two teams traded baskets early in overtime before a three-pointer by Smith gave the Lions an 87-84 lead. UNA would never trail again.

Tavaras Tolliver hit a trey of his own and another basket by Smith put UNA ahead 93-86 with 2:13 remaining. UWG got a basket and free throw from Sides on the ensuing possession but could get no closer than four the rest of the way.

Tolliver and Stafford finished with 18 points each. McGee and Jeff Hodge also had 11 points each for the Lions. With the 11 points, Hodge moves over 900 career points at North Alabama.

After struggling from the free throw line in recent games, North Alabama went 26-for-33 from the line against the Wolves. UNA also outscored West Georgia 36-15 in bench points. Kevin Ndahiro recorded a season-high 21 minutes. He went 5-of-7 from the free throw line with seven points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot.

Paul Turner led West Georgia (7-8 overall, 2-6 GSC) with 24 points.
