UNA MEN COME UP SHORT AT MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE

CLINTON, Miss., – A 98-88 road loss at Mississippi College dropped the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to 7-5 overall on Tuesday. The Lions are also 2-3 in Gulf South Conference play.
 
Jeff Hodge led five UNA players in double figures with 22 points, but the Choctaws shot 65 percent from the floor in the second half to maintain the lead.
 
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half until Mississippi College used a 10-1 run to grab a 44-37 lead with 2:04 remaining. The Choctaws led by seven in the closing seconds of the half before a jumper by UNA's Tavaras Tolliver made the score 46-41 at the break.
 
The Lions could get no closer than five over the final 20 minutes as Mississippi College made 29 trips to the free throw line and made 25 attempts. UNA was 14-of-40 (35 percent) from the floor in the second half. For the game, the Lions were 4-of-15 from three-point range.
 
The Choctaws (6-5 overall, 3-3 GSC) stretched the lead to double digits in the final nine minutes before North Alabama made one last push. Adrian Smith hit four free throws during a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 73-68 at the 7:28 mark.
 
Mississippi College, however, quickly pushed the lead back to 14, going 3-for-3 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free throw line over a two-minute span. A jumper by Isaiah Austin with 4:09 remaining gave the home team an 88-74 lead. UNA would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
 
Tolliver and Trenton Clayton scored 15 points each for the Lions. Kendall Stafford added 13 points while Sharwyn McGee recorded 11 points and 13 rebounds on the night. Antonio Johnson's 18 points led Mississippi College.
 
UNA will play at Delta State on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. on the DSU campus in Cleveland, Miss.
