DELTA STATE HOLDS OFF LIONS 61-55

CLEVELAND, Miss., – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team could not overcome a late deficit in a 61-55 loss at Delta State Thursday in Gulf South Conference play. The third straight loss leaves the Lions with a 7-6 overall record and 2-4 showing in league play.
 
DSU built a 13-point lead in the first 7:49 of playing time and held off the Lions each time the visitors tried to rally. UNA cut the deficit to 29-23 by the end of the first half and got within a single point with 17:41 remaining. The Statesmen, however, responded with a three-point basket on the ensuing possession and the Lions could get no closer than three down the stretch. Each team scored 32 points in the second half.
 
Both teams struggled to score throughout the contest. North Alabama shot 33.3 percent from the floor and made only 13-of-28 free throw attempts. DSU made 42.9 percent  of its shots and was 13-of-24 from the foul line.
 
UNA cut the lead to one on Adrian Smith's three-pointer early in the second half. For the game, the Lions were 8-of-27 from long range.
 
The home team led by as many as eight in the second half. UNA cut the deficit to four three times in the final 2:25. The Statesmen had possession and a 54-50 lead before the two teams traded three-pointers down the stretch. PJ Davis gave DSU a 57-50 lead before Kendarius Smith answered for the Lions with a trey in the final minute of play.
 
Delta State, however, was able to hit two free throws and force a miss on the defensive end to seal the win.
 
Kendall Stafford led UNA with 17 points while Sharwyn McGee pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Lions. Davis scored 20 points to lead DSU (7-7 overall, 5-1 GSC).
 
UNA will host Union on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
