PITT HOLDS ON FOR 71-66 WIN OVER UNA MEN

PITTSBURGH, Pa., – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team let a second-half lead slip away in a 71-66 loss at Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon.  With the loss, UNA falls to 1-3 on the season while Pitt remains undefeated at 5-0 on the year.
 
North Alabama led 33-29 at the half before the home team used an 8-0 run after the break to grab the lead for good. UNA, however, remained within striking distance and had a chance to tie the game in the closing moments.
 
Trailing by three points in the final 10 seconds, the Lions could not come up with a basket. Pitt was able to get the rebound and hit two free throws to ice the game with 2.4 seconds remaining.
 
Kendarius Smith hit a game-high five three-point baskets and finished with 19 points to lead the Lions. His trey at the 2:27 mark cut the Pitt lead to 65-64 and set up the wild finish.
 
The Panthers responded with four straight points, getting two free throws and a layup to go ahead 69-64 with 1:44 remaining. Smith found Cameron Diggs under the goal on the ensuing UNA possession for a basket to cut the lead to 69-66 and the Lions had two chances to tie the game after getting a pair of defensive stops.
 
Pitt's Xavier Johnson drew a foul after grabbing a loose ball on a UNA missed three-point attempt. The freshman hit two foul shots to put the game out of reach. He finished with a game-high 23 points.
 
UNA trailed by as many as seven in the first half before taking the lead in the closing minutes. After a jumper by Diggs a 31-29 lead with 20 seconds remaining, the Lions got a defensive stop. Christian Agnew then drew a foul and hit both free throws with two seconds to play to give North Alabama the four-point lead at the break.
 
Jamari Blackmon added13 points for UNA while Diggs tossed in 12 points on the day. Emanuel Littles also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
UNA will return home to host Martin Methodist on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
