LIONS TOP AUM 89-69 TO CLINCH GSC TOURNEY BERTH

FLORENCE – Tavaras Tolliver scored 21 points while Kendall Stafford and Sharwyn McGee added double-doubles as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team clinched a spot in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Tournament with an 89-69 home win over Auburn-Montgomery Wednesday evening at Flowers Hall. With a 9-9 record in GSC play, the Lions can finish no lower than eighth place in the league standings.
 
On Wednesday, UNA overcame a deficit at the half for the third straight game. The Lions trailed 41-38 at the break before shooting 59.4 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play.
 
A 7-0 run to start the second half quickly erased the deficit and the Warhawks never led again. After a three-pointer by Stafford tied the game at 41-41, baskets by McGee and Tolliver gave the Lions a four-point lead. AUM later tied the score at 53-53 before another 7-0 spurt gave UNA the lead for good.
 
UNA led 66-61 with 6:49 remaining before closing the game on a 23-8 run. AUM shot 30.3 percent in the second half as the Lions pulled away.
 
Stafford finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. McGee had 18 points and 12 boards for the Lions, who out-rebounded AUM 42-33. Adrian Smith rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 13 points.
 
The fourth straight win gives North Alabama a 14-11 overall record. It also avenged a 96-89 road loss to the Warhawks on Jan. 15.
 
Reagan Eubanks led AUM (9-17 overall, 5-13 GSC) with 16 points.
 
UNA will play at Valdosta State on Feb. 17. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. (Central) at The Complex on the VSU campus.
