Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UNA HOLDS OFF FALCONS 73-72

FLORENCE – After leading by as many as 13 points in the second half, the University of North Alabama men's basketball team survived a Montevallo comeback attempt and held on for a 73-72 victory Monday evening at Flowers Hall. With the win, UNA moves into a tie for eighth place in the Gulf South Conference standings with a 7-9 league record.

Montevallo, which lost to UNA 100-63 at home on Dec. 2, connected on a trio of three-point baskets in the final two minutes while the Lions (12-11 overall) struggled to put the game away. UNA was 13-of-24 from the free throw line, including a 4-for-8 showing down the stretch.

After a trey by the Falcons' Chris Williams cut the lead to 73-72 with 12 seconds left, Kendarius Smith missed the front end of a one-and-one to give the visitors one more chance. A runner by Williams with less than a second to go, however, was off the mark and the Lions grabbed the defensive rebound to seal the win.

Smith scored 18 points to lead the Lions. Tavaras Tolliver added 16 points while Jeff Hodge tossed in 14 points for the Lions. Kendall Stafford rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 10 points.

A three-pointer by Hodge gave UNA a 63-50 lead with 6:15 remaining. The shot also moved the senior from Birmingham over 1,000 points for his career.

After trailing 32-26 at the break, the Lions opened the second half on a 22-4 run. Tolliver scored 10 points during the spurt before a basket by Trenton Clayton gave UNA a 48-36 lead with 13:10 remaining. Montevallo responded with a run of its own to pull to within 50-49 before the Lions again stretched the lead to double digits.

Hodge scored eight points during the 13-1 run as North Alabama built the 13-point advantage at the 6:15 mark to set the stage for the wild finish.

The win, along with a UAH loss to West Alabama on the same day, moves the Lions into a tie with the Chargers for eighth place in the GSC. The top eight teams in the standings advance to the upcoming conference tournament.

UNA will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday against UAH. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Flowers hall.
