SOUTH CAROLINA PULLS AWAY LATE OVER UNA MEN

COLUMBIA, S.C., – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team struggled from the floor Wednesday during a 77-55 season-opening loss at South Carolina. The Lions (0-1) shot 24.6 percent from the floor on 15-of-61 shooting, including a 2-of-21 showing from three-point range.

UNA players James Anderson and Mervin James fouled out and three other players finished with four fouls each as the Gamecocks (1-0) took advantage of 30 fouls against the Lions. Despite the cold shooting from the floor, North Alabama did hit 22-of-33 free throw attempts.

C.J. Brim led North Alabama with 12 points. The junior from Tupelo did most of his damage on a 7-of-9 effort from the free throw line. He added two rebounds and a pair of assists.

South Carolina made its move just under five minutes into the second half. After a basket by Christian Agnew made the score 43-39 with 15:31 remaining, the Gamecocks reeled off 14 straight points. A steal and dunk by Trae Hannibal gave the home team a 57-39 lead. UNA would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Agnew finished with nine points for the Lions. Emmanuel Littles added eight points and seven rebounds on the night. Justin Minaya led South Carolina with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

North Alabama shot just 18.8 percent in the first half, including an 0-for-12 mark from three-point range. South Carolina broke an early 7-7 tied with six straight points to take control.

After UNA cut the deficit to 13-11 on a basket by Cameron Diggs, the Gamecocks used a 10-2 run to stretch the lead to double digits. A putback with 2:47 remaining gave South Carolina its largest lead of the half at 31-20. The Lions got within seven points before the home team got a jumper and a free throw in the final minute to grab a 37-27 lead.

UNA will return to Florence on Sunday for its 2019-20 home opener. The Lions are set to take on Carver Bible, with tip-off set for 2 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
