LIONS SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH AUSTIN PEAY

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn., – After dropping a 9-1 mercy-rule decision in the opener, the University of North Alabama softball team rebounded with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap to earn a split Sunday at Austin Peay. UNA is now 11-6 on the season and will play at Alabama A&M on Wednesday.
 
Megan Garst tossed a complete-game shutout in the second contest. The junior from Columbiana allowed just two hits with 10 strikeouts to improve to 5-2 on the year.
 
She retired 13 of the first 14 batters faced and took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Governors then got two singles in the frame and put runners at first and second before Garst got out of the inning and retired seven straight to end the game.
 
UNA took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Meleah Hargett led off the game with a single. She was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and reached third on an Austin Peay error. She later scored on a wild pitch to give the Lions the early lead. After reaching base on the ASPU error, Veronica Westfall also scored on an RBI-single by Harley Stokes.
 
North Alabama added a run off three hits in the top of the third. UNA loaded the bases before an infield single by Chloe Kirkland scored Westfall from third.
 
Alex Brown led off the fifth inning with a single and reached third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Shollenberger. Brown and Kirkland each finished the second game 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
In the opener, Austin Peay took control with a seven-run first inning. The Governors sent 12 batters to the plate and had five hits in the frame, including a solo home run.
 
The home team also added a pair of bases-loaded walks before scoring another run on a fielder's choice and closing the inning with two more RBI-singles.
 
North Alabama scored its lone run in the top of the third inning before Austin Peay added two runs in the fourth to evoke the eight-run mercy rule. Three different UNA pitchers combined to allow nine runs off eight hits. Sidney Revels (2-1) took the loss.
 
Hargett scored the run for the Lions. She reached on an infield single and later scored on Westfall's hit to right field. Hargett also singled in the first inning to finish 2-for-3 and account for two of UNA's three hits in the first game.
 
UNA will play two games at Alabama A&M on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for noon on the AAMU campus in Huntsville.
