UNA SOFTBALL DOWNS MEMPHIS 2-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Meleah Hargett's two-out double in the top of the seventh inning scored both runs in a 2-1 victory at Memphis on Friday. It was the lone game of the day for the University of North Alabama softball team at the 2019 Memphis Tiger Classic. The Lions improve to 12-6 with the win.
 
Trailing 1-0 entering the final frame, Chloe Kirkland led off the inning with an infield single. She was sacrificed to second base by McKenna Ray before another infield single by Riley Grace Honeycutt put runners at the corners.
 
A strikeout then brought Hargett to the plate with two outs. The sophomore from Hayden sent a 3-2 pitching into the gap in left center, scoring Honeycutt and pinch-runner Jessie Brown to give UNA a 2-1 lead.
 
Megan Garst retired three straight batters in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the win for UNA. She finished the game with eight strikeouts, allowing one run off two hits to improve to 6-2 on the season.
 
Memphis scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning. After getting a leadoff triple, the Tigers scored on an infield single to take a 1-0 lead.
 
For the game, UNA held a 7-2 advantage in hits. Hargett went 2-for-4 at the plate.
 
UNA will remain in Memphis to play twice on Saturday. The Lions will play Murray State at 9 a.m. before facing No. 13 Texas Tech at 11:15 a.m.
