SOFTBALL SPLITS TWO GAMES AT MEMPHIS TIGER CLASSIC

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of North Alabama softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Memphis Tiger Classic on Saturday, knocking off Murray State 3-2 before falling to No. 10 Texas Tech 5-2. UNA is now 13-7 on the season and will return home Wednesday against Alabama State.
 
Chloe Kirkland's walk-off home run gave UNA the 3-2 win over Murray State. The redshirt freshman from Hayden came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. She connected on the first pitch for a solo shot to dead center.
 
UNA overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to rally for the win. After the Racers scored in the top of the first inning, an RBI-single by Veronica Westfall tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame.
 
Murray State added another run in the top of the third and held the 2-1 lead when Harley Stokes hit a solo home run to answer for the Lions in the bottom of the fourth.
 
Three different UNA pitchers combined to hold Murray State to a pair of runs. Sidney Revels started and pitched the first four innings before Michelle Moore came in to pitch the top of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Megan Garst (7-2) recorded the win after tossing two scoreless innings. Each North Alabama pitcher recorded three strikeouts.
 
Westfall led the way at the plate with a 2-for-4 showing for the Lions.
 
Against Texas Tech, the Lions took a scoreless tie into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Red Raiders plated two runs each in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings before adding a single run in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Trailing 4-0, UNA cut the lead in half with a two-run frame in the top of the sixth. Alex Brown was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. She advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI-single by Meleah Hargett. Hargett later scored from third on an infield single by Harley Stokes.
 
Both teams finished the game with six hits. Stokes, Hargett and Danielle de Ruiter each went 2-for-3 for UNA.
 
Jensen Strickland (0-2) took the pitching loss for North Alabama. She worked the first 3.2 innings, allowing two runs off four hits.
