SOFTBALL TOPS ALABAMA STATE 6-0, ASUN PLAY NEXT

FLORENCE – North Alabama pitcher Megan Garst and Laken Distefano combined for a one-hit shutout as the UNA softball team picked up a 6-0 home win over Alabama State on Wednesday. The victory gives the Lions a 14-7 record heading into ASUN Conference play.
 
Garst started the game and struck out five of the six batters faced in the first two innings. Distefano pitched the next five frames and got the win to improve to 3-1 on the season.
 
UNA scored all six runs in the first three innings. Meleah Hargett led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk. She reached third on a double by Lexie Harper and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Chloe Kirkland.
 
In the second inning, the Lions added three runs. After a walk and a single put runners on with two outs, Hargett reached on an infield single to score Alex Brown from second base. Hargett stole second before a single up the middle by Harper scored two more runs.
 
Harley Stokes provided the next two runs for the Lions in the bottom of the third inning. The sophomore from Demopolis hit her team-leading seventh home run of the year. The two-run shot also scored Veronica Westfall and gave UNA a 6-0 lead.
 
Alabama State (12-11) avoided a no-hitter with a two-out double in the top of the seventh inning.
 
Harper finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI.
 
UNA will now turn its attention to ASUN Conference play this weekend at home against North Florida. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday at 2 p.m. before wrapping the series with a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
