SOFTBALL LIONS FALL TWICE IN ASUN OPENER

FLORENCE – North Florida's pitching staff held North Alabama to a single run in the first game, then completed the sweep with an offensive outburst in the second to pick up two wins Saturday in ASUN Conference softball action. With the 3-1 and 10-7 losses, UNA falls to 14-9 on the season and opens ASUN play with an 0-2 mark.

In the opener, UNA held an 8-5 advantage in hits, but stranded 10 base runners. The Osprey got all the runs they would need in the top of the second inning. After a leadoff single by Navia Penrod, UNF's Veronika Klimplova hit a two-run home run to right center.

The Lions answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning, but could not score again. Alex Brown doubled and later scored on a North Florida error to make the score 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, UNF got a leadoff triple, followed by a sacrifice fly for an insurance run. The Lions put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the last two frames, but came up short each time.

Brown and Lexie Harper each went 2-for-3 in the opener. Megan Garst (7-3) was stuck with the pitching loss. She started the game and pitched the first 5.1 innings, striking out eight batters and allowing three runs off four hits.

In the nightcap, a North Alabama rally came up short. UNA was unable to recover after the Ospreys (19-9 overall, 2-0 ASUN) scored six runs in the top of the second inning.

After the Lions scored twice in the bottom of the second, UNF extended its lead to 9-2 with three runs in the top of the third. North Alabama scored five runs over the final three innings, bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth.

UNF starter Morgan Blourne, however, returned to pitch the final inning to end the comeback attempt. She improved to 7-3 on the season after working five innings on the day.

Danielle de Ruiter gave UNA its first runs with a two-out triple in the bottom of the second inning. The hit scored Harley Stokes from second and McKenna Ray from first.

The Lions plated two runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. A two-run home run by Brown made the score 9-4. After the Ospreys added a single run in the top of the sixth, UNA answered again in the bottom of the frame with an RBI-double by Katie Eakes and a bases-loaded walk by Meleah Hargett.

UNA added another run in the bottom of the seventh, but could get no closer. Chloe Kirkland singled and reached third on a double by Hannah Shollenberger. She later scored on a wild pitch to wrap up the scoring for the Lions.

North Alabama had nine hits in the second game. Kirkland was the only player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Jensen Strickland (0-3) started and took the loss in the circle. She worked the first 1.1 innings, allowing four runs off three hits.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game ASUN series on Sunday with a single game set for 1 p.m.
