LIONS SWEEP JACKSONVILLE TO CLOSE REGULAR SEASON

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – A pair of wins at Jacksonville on Saturday wrapped up the regular season for the University of North Alabama softball team and secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming ASUN Conference Tournament. Meleah Hargett was 6-for-7 on the day and Megan Garst pitched her second consecutive no-hitter as the Lions recorded the 2-0 and 3-1 victories.

UNA is now 25-18 on the season and 10-10 in ASUN play. The Lions passed Kennesaw State (10-11) for the No. 4 seed and will open play against the Owls Wednesday in the first round.

In the opener, Garst (15-5) ran her scoreless streak to 29 consecutive innings. She struck out nine batters and become the first pitcher in UNA history to record back-to-back no-hitters. For the year, she has six complete-game shutouts and an ASUN-leading 0.80 ERA.

UNA did all of its scoring in the top of the third inning. Meleah Hargett and Madison Daniel led off the frame with consecutive singles before being sacrificed to second and third base by Veronica Westfall. Alex Brown then drove in both runs with a single to right field.

Hargett finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three singles as the Lions totaled nine hits in the opener. Daniel was also 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

In the second game, UNA pitcher Laken Distefano took a 1-0 lead and no-hit bid into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Dolphins broke through. After getting a single through the right side, Jacksonville got a stolen base and later scored off a UNA throwing error to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lions answered in the top of the seventh. After McKenna Ray singled and Katie Eakes reached on an error, pinch-runners Jessie Brown and Danielle de Ruiter reached second and third. An RBI-single by Hargett scored Brown and put runners at the corners. Hargett and de Ruiter then executed a double steal to give UNA a 3-1 lead.

Jensen Strickland pitched the final 1.1 innings to get her first win of the season. Distefano finished with 5.2 innings of work. She struck out two and retired the first 13 batters before allowing a walk in the fifth inning. The lone run she allowed was unearned.

North Alabama's first run came in the top of the second inning when Riley Grace Honeycutt doubled to left field. A Jacksonville throwing error on the play allowed the freshman from Northport to score from second base and give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

At the plate, Hargett was 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Lions totaled six hits.

UNA will open play at the ASUN Tournament Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against Kennesaw State. The tourney will take place on the FGCU campus in Fort Myers, Fla. A win would put the Lions in the second round to face top-seeded Lipscomb at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. A loss would set up an elimination game Thursday at 2 p.m.
