UNA MEN DOWN NORTH FLORIDA 82-78 FOR SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – Five players reached double figures in scoring and the University of North Alabama men's basketball team extended its winning streak to six straight games with an 82-78 win at North Florida on Friday. The win gives UNA a 10-3 overall record and keeps the Lions in first place in the ASUN standings with a 6-1 league mark.

Against the Ospreys, UNA led by as many as 13 points in the first half and took a 38-31 advantage into the break. The Lions regained a double-digit lead early in the second half before the home team fought back. A basket with 2:09 remaining gave UNF its first lead of the game at 74-72.

The Lions responded with five straight points from Jamari Blackmon. On the ensuing possession, the junior from Hoover hit a turnaround jumper to tie the game at 74-74. After UNA got a defensive stop, Blackmon took a pass from Mervin James and connected from three-point range to give the Lions a 77-74 lead with 1:03 to play.

The two teams traded baskets, with the Ospreys getting a runner from Jose Placer and UNA answering with a jumper by Payton Youngblood to make the score 79-76 in the final minute.

North Florida connected on two free throws to get within a single point and applied full court pressure to try and regain possession. Mervin James, however, inbounded the ball off the back of a UNF defender, then dribbled down the left side of the court and drew a foul with 16.2 seconds remaining. The sophomore from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to 81-78.

The Ospreys missed a desperation three-point attempt and Isaac Chatman secured the defensive rebound and hit one of two free throws to lock up the victory.

James, who was 7-of-7 from the free throw line, led UNA with 19 points. Blackmon finished with 12 points while true freshman Detalian Brown scored all 11 of his points in the first half for the Lions. Youngblood and Emanuel Littles rounded out the top scorers for North Alabama with 10 points each. Littles also added a game-high 10 rebounds for his 12th career double-double.

The same two teams will play again on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. (CST) at the UNF Arena in Jacksonville.
