UNA SOFTBALL SWEEPS TENNESSEE STATE IN HOME OPENER

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team got a mercy-rule victory in the opener and timely hitting in the second game in a 10-2, 6-3 sweep over Tennessee State Monday in the team's home opener at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Complex. The two wins give UNA a 3-2 record on the season.

The Lions took advantage of eight Tennessee State errors on the day, including six in the opener and eight of the 10 runs were unearned.  UNA scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and three times in the second to grab an early 5-0 lead without recording a hit.

After the Tigers added an RBI-double in the top of the third, the North Alabama bats finally came alive in the bottom of the fourth. The Lions loaded the bases on a double by Danielle de Ruiter, a single by Meleah Hargett and a walk by Katie Killen.

Harley Stokes then connected on a two-out single that scored two runs to give the Lions a 7-1 lead. Two more runs then scored on a TSU fielding error, followed by an RBI-single by Taylor Brown to make the score 10-1.

The Tigers answered with a single run in the top of the fifth and stranded a runner at third that would have kept the eight-run mercy rule out of play.

Megan Garst started in the circle and pitched the first four innings to get the win. She allowed a run off three hits with seven strikeouts to inch closer to the school's career record. The senior now has 453 career strikeouts, trailing UNA's all-time leader, Hillary Carpenter by just two.

At the plate, UNA managed only four hits while the visitors recorded five.

Tennessee State also held an 8-7 advantage in hits in the nightcap. UNA built a 4-0 lead before holding off the Tigers for the 6-3 victory.

A three-run second inning gave the Lions the early lead. Georgia Land and Sidney Bevis opened the frame with back-to-back singles. After a walk loaded the bases, de Ruiter singled home both runs to give UNA a 2-0 lead. An RBI-ground out by Hargett later made the score 3-0.

An RBI-single by Harley Stokes increased the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning before TSU rallied. Single runs in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth frames closed the gap. After an RBI-single in the top of the sixth put the tying run in scoring position, Olivia DePew came on in relief of Maci Birdyshaw in the circle. The sophomore from Derby, Kan., recorded the final out, then pitched a scoreless seventh inning to get the save.

Birdyshaw (1-1) worked the first 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs off seven hits with seven strikeouts to earn her first victory of the season.

At the plate, de Ruiter was the only UNA player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a trio of RBI.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a single game on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Florence.
