LIONS SPLIT BEACH MATCHES AT UNF SPRING FLING

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – The University of North Alabama beach volleyball team posted a 1-1 record on the opening day of the North Florida Spring Fling Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla. The Lions knocked off Eckerd College 3-2 before falling 5-0 to the College of Charleston to grab a 4-5 record on the season.

In the opener against Eckerd, the two teams battled back and forth trading victories throughout the first four matches. The deciding point came down to the No. 2 position, where Paula Klemperer and Natalie Kordt outlasted the Tritons duo 17-21, 21-17, 15-6.

UNA took an overall lead twice before the deciding match. Mackenzie Martin and Catie Lader posted a straight-sets victory at No. 4 to give the Lions the early advantage. After Eckerd evened the match at No. 5, Maya Dickson and Taylor Seney regained the lead with a 21-15, 21-14 win at the top spot.

The Tritons once again tied the match with a win at No. 3 to set up the deciding game.

Against the College of Charleston, the Lions stayed within striking distance in every set before falling each time. The first two matches to finish proved to be the closest.

After falling in the opening set at No. 5, Samantha Shafer and Allison forced a third set with a 21-10 victory. The Tritons, however, outlasted the UNA team with a 15-13 win in the third set.

At No. 4, Martin and Ladner had a similar battle, rallying from an opening set loss. A 21-15 victory forced a deciding set only to see Eckerd record the win with a 19-17 victory.

UNA will remain in Jacksonville to play two more matches at the UNF Spring Fling. The Lions will play Eckerd again Sunday morning before closing out the event with a match against the host Ospreys.
