SOFTBALL COMPLETES BELLARMINE SWEEP WITH 3-1 WIN

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball got timely hitting and another solid pitching performance by Megan Garst Sunday in a 3-1 home win over Bellarmine. The victory caps a three-game sweep to open ASUN Conference play and gives the Lions a 13-4 overall record.

Just as it had in the previous two games against the Knights, UNA was able to take an early lead by scoring in the first two innings. Sidney Bevis singled and stole second base in the bottom of the first inning. She later scored on a two-out single by Harley Stokes.

UNA got back-to-back hits to lead off the bottom of the second inning. A single by Taylor Brown and a double by Danielle de Ruiter put runners on second and third with no outs. Georgia Land loaded the bases with a walk before Lexie Harper drew another walk to give the Lions a 2-0 lead and chase Bellarmine starter Natalie Magnus from the circle.

A sacrifice fly by Bevis scored another run to give UNA a 3-0 lead that Garst would make stand.

After tossing a no-hitter against the Knights on Saturday, Garst took another no-hit bid into the fourth inning before a single and stolen base gave the visitors a runner in scoring position. Consecutive strikeouts, however, ended the scoring threat.

Bellarmine broke up the shutout by leading off the sixth inning with a double and later scoring on an error. The lone run was unearned against Garst, who finished the day with nine strikeouts against three hits in seven innings of work. She improved to 6-3 on the season with the win.

At the plate, North Alabama totaled seven hits. A 2-for-3 showing by de Ruiter led the way.

UNA is scheduled to host Tennessee Tech on Tuesday. First pitch for the single game is set for 4 p.m. at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Complex.
