LIONS SPLIT SECOND DAY OF BLAZER INVITE

BIRNMINGHAM - The University of North Alabama softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the UAB Blazer Invite, posting a 7-0 win over IUPUI before falling 5-2 to Austin Peay. The split gives the Lions an 11-3 record on the season.
 
In the early game against IUPUI, Maci Birdyshaw pitched five shutout innings to get the win. The sophomore from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits to improve to 5-0 on the season.
 
Single runs in the bottom of the first three innings gave UNA a 3-0 lead. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Lions got two runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth frames. The Jaguars added a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to avoid the shutout.
 
An RBI-groundout by Hailey Jones started the scoring. The sacrifice bunt scored Lexie Harper from third base. UNA drew bases-loaded walks from Sidney Bevis and Kalli Daniel in the bottom of the second and third frames to extend the lead to three runs.
 
The Lions scored their remaining four runs from home runs. A two-run shot by Georgia Land stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning. Following a leadoff single by Bevis in the bottom of the sixth, Taylor Brown connected on a pinch-hit homer to left field to make the score 7-0.
 
IUPUI added a two-run blast of its own in the top of the seventh to wrap up the scoring for the game.
 
Six different players recorded seven hits for UNA. Emma Broadfoot was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.
 
In the second game, Austin Peay got a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and held off the Lions for the 5-2 victory.
 
Trailing 3-0 in the top of the third inning, the Lions took advantage of two ASPU miscues to score. After reaching on an error to lead off the frame, Harper advanced to third before scoring on another error by the Governors to cut the deficit to 3-1.
 
Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth innings and Austin Peay got a two-out single that scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
 
In the top of the seventh inning, UNA got two quick outs before three straight singles brought the tying run to the plate. Consecutive hits by Bevis and Jones brought Broadfoot to the plate, who single to center field to drive in a run. A flyball to left field, however, ended the game.
 
For the game, North Alabama stranded nine baserunners. Jones finished the second game 2-for-4 at the plate.
 
Alyssa Drogemuller (0-1) took the pitching loss after working the first 2.1 innings. She allowed three runs off three hits with a strikeout. Sophie Golliver pitched 3.2 innings, allowing two runs off four hits.
 
UNA will wrap up play at the event on Sunday. The Lions will play IUPUI again at 10 a.m.
