LIONS TOP LIPSCOMB 8-1 TO WIN SERIES

NASHVILLE, Tenn., – Brooke Burback was 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI to lead the University of North Alabama softball team to an 8-1 win at Lipscomb on Sunday. The win secured the three-game ASUN Conference series for the Lions, who improve to 27-11 overall and 6-6 in ASUN play.

The 27 wins is the most by the program since making the jump to the Division I level. UNA's first Division I team posted a 26-20 record in the 2019 season.

On Sunday, UNA scored eight runs off 11 hits while Maci Birdyshaw picked up the complete-game victory in the circle. The sophomore from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., took a shutout into the seventh inning before a leadoff home run gave Lipscomb its first run. Birdyshaw finished the game with a single earned run off five hits with four strikeouts to improve to 12-2 on the year. She recorded both UNA victories in the series.

A run in the top of the second inning gave the Lions an early lead. Harley Stokes singled to lead off the frame. She reached third before an RBI-double by Haven Kibry drove in the game's first run.

A pair of extra-base hits extended the UNA lead in the top of the fourth inning. Following a leadoff double by Meleah Hargett, Burback homered to left field to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Stokes was hit by a pitch with two outs. She later scored on a single up the middle by Hargett.

Home runs provided the remaining four runs for the Lions. A three-run shot by Broadfoot broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning before a solo blast by Burback made the score 8-0 in the top of the seventh.

For the game, seven different UNA players recorded a hit. Hargett also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

UNA will host Bellarmine for a three-game ASUN series next weekend. The two teams will play a double-header, beginning Friday at 2 p.m. before wrapping the series with a single game at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
