SOFTBALL COMPLETES SWEEP WITH 7-4 WIN OVER KNIGHTS

FLORENCE – After falling behind 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the University of North Alabama softball team scored four runs in the frame to rally for a 7-4 home victory over Bellarmine on Saturday. The win capped a three-game sweep over the visiting Knights and gives UNA a 30-11 overall record, including a 9-6 mark in ASUN Conference play.
 
The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab the early lead. UNA, however, would get only three hits over the next four innings while the Knights rallied. Bellarmine scored twice in the top of the fourth inning and added two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
 
North Alabama answered with a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame. After an RBI-double by Meleah Hargett tied the game, Brooke Burback drew a walk and Haven Kirby homered to centerfield to put the Lions ahead 7-4.
 
Maci Birdyshaw then recorded three straight outs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory. She finished the game with four runs off three hits and two strikeouts to improve to 14-2 on the season.
 
UNA used three hits in the first innings to take the early lead. An RBI-double by Hailey Jones was followed by a two-run home run by Georgia Land. Land finished the weekend 3-for-6 at the plate and now leads the ASUN in home runs (13) and RBI (40).
 
For the day, the Lions had seven hits. Hargett was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
 
UNA will play at Alabama on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3:45 p.m. at Rhoads Stadium on the UA campus in Tuscaloosa.
