SOFTBALL FALLS TWICE TO CENTRAL ARKANSAS

FLORENCE – Central Arkansas maintained first place in the ASUN Conference West Division with a double-header sweep over the University of North Alabama softball team Saturday afternoon. With the 6-3 and 6-5 losses, UNA falls to 33-16 on the year and drops from second to third place in the division standings with an 11-9 mark in ASUN play.

The Lions fell behind early in both games, coming up short in a rally attempt each time. In the opener, UCA plated a single run in the top of the second inning before getting a three-run third to take a 4-0 lead.

UNA cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff single by Hailey Jones, Georgia Land hit her ASUN-leading 16th home run of the season with a two-run shot to right field. The Bears, however, answered with single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth frames.

Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions got a leadoff single by Brooke Burback. Pinch runner Mary Grayson Kilpatrick reached second base before scoring on an RBI-single by Sidney Bevis. UNA would get no closer.

Jones finished the first game 2-for-4 at the plate and was the only UNA player with multiple hits.

Maci Birdyshaw took the pitching loss after working the first five innings. She allowed six runs off nine hits to fall to 16-3 on the season.

UNA played from behind throughout the second game as well. UCA scored twice in the top of the first inning to grab the early lead.

In the bottom of the third, two-out hits by Bevis and Jones put runners at the corners before Land reached on an error to allow an unearned run to score.

After the Bears answered in the top of the fourth with two runs of their own to take a 4-1 lead, UNA plated a single run in the bottom of the frame. Katie Killen reached base on a fielder's choice before advancing third on a UCA error. She later scored on a ground ball by Haven Kirby to make the score 4-2.

Each team scored two runs in the sixth inning. After UCA briefly extended its lead to 6-2 in the top of the frame, the Lions had their best chance to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.

A leadoff home run by Harley Stokes started the scoring. Two walks and a single by Killen then loaded the bases with no outs. A single up the middle by Kirby made the score 6-4 before a pitching change by UCA resulted in three straight outs to get the visitors out of the jam.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Lions scored again and got the tying run on base before coming up short. A one-out double by Stokes was followed by an RBI-single by Emma Broadfoot. Two strikeouts, however, ended the game.

Broadfoot was 2-for-2 and drove in a run in the second game. Stokes was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Elena Escobar worked all seven innings in the circle for the Lions. She allowed six runs off 11 hits with a walk and pair of strikeouts.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
