LIONS TOP CENTRAL ARKANSAS TO CLINCH ASUN TOURNEY BERTH

FLORENCE – Meleah Hargett's two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Harley Stokes from second base to give the University of North Alabama softball team a 3-2 win over Central Arkansas on Saturday. The win gives UNA a 34-16 record on the season and clinches a berth in the upcoming ASUN Conference Tournament with a 12-9 league mark.

The Lions will close the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Eastern Kentucky. ASUN tournament play begins the following weekend in Jacksonville, Fla.

On Sunday, UNA had to rally from a 2-0 deficit after the Bears scored twice in the top of the fourth inning.

The Lions tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with another two-out hit. After a walk by Lexie Harper, Sidney Bevis connected on her first home run of the season with a two-run shot to right center. Neither team scored again until the eighth inning.

With two outs, Stokes and Emma Broadfoot drew back-to-back walks to put runners at first and second for Hargett. The senior, playing in her final home game of her five-year career, hit the first pitch through the right side for the game-winning RBI-single.

UNA had eight hits on the day but stranded eight runners. UCA totaled 12 baserunners after getting six hits, two walks and taking advantage of four errors on the Lions.

Sidney Revels, however, was able to pitch out of trouble through the game. The senior from Bonifay, Fla., threw 110 pitches and worked all eight innings with two strikeouts to improve to 6-4 on the season.

At the plate, Hargett finished the game 3-for-4 with the lone RBI. Hailey Jones was also 2-for-3 on the day.

UNA will play a double-header at EKU on Saturday with a single-game scheduled for the following day in Richmond, Ky.
