SOFTBALL SPLITS ASUN DOUBLE-HEADER AT LIPSCOMB

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, Tenn., – After picking up a 10-2 mercy-rule victory in the opener, the University of North Alabama softball team let a 7-0 lead slip away in an 8-7 loss at Lipscomb on Saturday to split the first two games of a three-game ASUN Conference series. The split gives UNA a 26-11 record on the season with a 5-6 record in league action.

In the opener, the Lions scored 10 runs off 13 hits. A five-run first inning started the scoring for the day. After loading the bases with one out, Harley Stokes singled to drive in the first run. Georgia Land then singled the push two more runs across the plate to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

A sacrifice fly by Meleah Hargett and another RBI-single by Brooke Burback gave UNA the five-run lead.

Two more runs in the top of the second inning extended the UNA lead. An infield hit by Emma Broadfoot was followed by another RBI-single from Land to make the score 7-0.

After Lipscomb answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions used a three-run sixth to evoke the eight-run mercy rule.

Hailey Jones led off the frame with a double. She reached third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Land. Hargett then walked and later scored on an error to give the Lions the 10-2 advantage.

The Bisons went down in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve the UNA win. Maci Birdyshaw worked all six innings for the Lions. She improved to 11-2 after striking out six without yielding a walk.

At the plate, Land was 3-for-3 with four RBI. Jones and Lexie Harper also each posted a 3-for-4 showing.

The second game started similar to the first. UNA scored four in the top of the first inning, two in the second and one in the third to take a 7-0 lead. The Bisons, however, scored in the bottom of each of the next four innings, including a solo home run in the sixth to grab an 8-7 lead.

In the top of the seventh, a fly ball by Hargett was caught just over the left field fence to prevent the tying home run. Burback then singled to reach, but was stranded to preserve the win for the home team.

Early hits gave the Lions the big lead. An RBI-single by Broadfoot was followed by back-to-back home runs. Harley Stokes belted a two-run blast to left center before Land hit a solo shot to dead center to give UNA a 4-0 lead.

The Lions got RBI-doubles by Broadfoot and Sidney Bevis in the second inning and a single up the middle by Haven Kirby in the third to score another run and take the 7-0 lead. UNA, however, got only two hits over the final four innings during the Lipscomb rally.

The Bisons scored two runs in the bottom of the third, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to tie the game. The single run in the sixth proved to be the game-winner.

Broadfoot finished the second game 3-for-3 at the plate. Burback and Kirby added two hits each. Three different UNA pitchers saw action in the circle. Sidney Revels took the loss to fall to 5-4 on the year.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Draper Diamond on the Lipscomb campus in Nashville.
