SOFTBALL LIONS ADVANCE WITH 9-5 WIN OVER UNLV

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The University of North Alabama softball team stayed in the winner's bracket of the National Invitational Softball Championship on Sunday with a 9-5 victory over No. 3 seed UNLV. The win gives UNA a 40-18 record on the season, as well as a day off before resuming play against No. 2 seed Baylor Tuesday at TC Colorado Field.

Against UNLV, the sixth-seeded Lions continued to put up impressive offensive numbers, scoring all nine runs in the first four innings.

After reaching on an error to start the game, Lexie Harper scored on an RBI-ground out by Georgia Land to give UNA an early 1-0 lead.

The Lions extended their lead to 4-0 with three more runs in the top of the second. Emma Broadfoot led off the frame with a single and later scored on Haven Kirby's single up the middle. UNA later had runners at second and third with two outs when Meleah Hargett drove in two runs with a single through the left side.

UNLV scored twice in the bottom of the second inning before the Lions again added to the lead in the top of the third. Harley Stokes singled and reached third before stealing home. Kirby and Sidney Bevis also each singled home runs to give UNA a 7-2 lead.

A three-run inning by UNLV in the bottom of the third inning cut the deficit to 7-5, but the Rebels would get no closer. Broadfoot wrapped up the scoring on the day with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth.

Elena Escobar (3-4) pitched the final four scoreless innings to get the win in the circle for North Alabama. The true freshman from Spring Hill, Tenn., scattered three hits and struck out two, including the final batter of the game.

At the plate, the Lions totaled nine hits. Broadfoot was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kirby also drove in two runs on a 2-for-3 showing.

A win over Baylor on Tuesday would send UNA into the championship round, featuring the final four teams in another double-elimination event. A loss would set up an elimination game on Wednesday with a spot in the championship round on the line.

First pitch against Baylor is set for 5 p.m. (CST).
