Men’s Tennis preps for ASUN road duals this weekend

Lions hit the road to face Austin Peay and Bellarmine

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (March 13, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team embarks on a two-dual road swing, facing the Austin Peay Governors and Bellarmine Knights to open Atlantic Sun Conference play.

The Lions travel for its first conference bouts of the season, opening the slate against the Governors and Knights. UNA has won its last three duals and looks to continue its winning ways with the road trips to Tennessee and Kentucky. North Alabama opens the weekend against Austin Peay on Friday, March 14 before concluding against Bellarmine on Sunday, March 16.

Both matchups serve as doubleheaders with Women's Tennis, who open against the Governors and Knights in the morning.

First serve against Austin Peay is set for 2 p.m. while action against Bellarmine starts at 1:30 p.m. Live stats will be available for both duals with links becoming available closer to match time.

LAST TIME OUT:
North Alabama concluded its nonconference schedule against Alabama A&M, rolling to a 4-0 sweep in the afternoon bout. North Alabama extended its winning ways to a third dual, while also remaining unbeaten at home with a 5-0 record.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: Heading into the ASUN schedule, North Alabama is winning doubles matches at a 58.6 percent rate and singles at a 66.7 percent mark. UNA has also been victorious in four of its last five duals, including two respective sweeps against New Orleans and Alabama A&M. Sophomore Alberto Altur secured North Alabama's first ASUN weekly honor in the respective time frame, winning the accolade on March 5. Sophomore Izan Orgiles leads the Lions with an 8-2 doubles record, with Orgiles and Altur combining for a 7-1 record. Altur has the team high in singles matches with freshman Satoru Nakajima, both victorious in seven contests.

SCOUTING AUSTIN PEAY: The Governors enter the dual 4-4 on the season, also beginning ASUN play this weekend against North Alabama and Lipscomb. Austin Peay's last meeting saw the Govs defeat Cumberland on March 11, taking a 4-3 result against the Phoenix. Austin Peay entered the season picked ninth in the 2025 ASUN's Men Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll. The head coach for the Governors is Ross Brown.

SERIES HISTORY: The Lions and Governors meet in the 21st meeting, with North Alabama leading the all-time series, 13-7. UNA and Austin Peay have split the last four meetings, but North Alabama swept the Govs in their last meeting in 2024.

SCOUTING BELLARMINE: The Knights face North Alabama with a 4-5 record, concluding the weekend with the afternoon bout. Bellarmine has been winners of their previous two contests, coming off wins against Centre College and Holy Cross College on March 1. The Knights win singles matches at a 48.8 percent rate, but Bellarmine's strength comes in doubles with a 52.6 percent win rate. Six Knights have seven or more doubles wins across the entire 2024-25 season, led by Matthew Nice with a 15-5 record. In singles, Jack Batchelor leads with a 15-10 record across the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 season. Bellarmine was picked to finish sixth in the 2025 ASUN Men's Tennis Preseason Poll. The Knights are led by Head Coach Will Davis.

SERIES HISTORY: The eighth all-time meeting between the two programs, North Alabama leads the series, 6-1. The Lions won the last meeting in 2024, taking a 5-2 result against the Knights. Bellarmine's lone win came in a 5-2 win from 2023.
