NOTES
SERIES HISTORY: This is the seventh meeting between the two programs, all of them coming since the arrival of UNA at the Division I level. The pair have played each season barring 2020 due to the COVID-shortened year. North Alabama holds a 4-2 advantage over JSU, and before last year, the Gamecocks' last win came in 2021. In 2022, former Lion Chloe Fell scored two goals against JSU to hold a Division I school record for most goal in a game.
SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS: Jacksonville State opened the season with a 3-2 win over ASUN foe, West Georgia. However, it was a quiet one for a majority of the game. JSU scored the first goal in the 15th minute. In the final 12 minutes of the game, four goals were scored between the two teams as JSU edged out UWG with their third goal in the 88th minute. The Gamecocks put 20 shots up with 10 on goal and had eight corners in their first matchup of the season. The first three games for JSU are all away from the Jax State Soccer Complex to begin the season.
ABOUT LAST GAME: North Alabama dropped their first game of the season on Thursday, August 14 against ETSU. The Lions fell 1-0 as transfer goalkeeper Madison Vukas recorded 10 saves — a career-high through her five-year playing career. The Lions mustered three corner kicks and four shots for the night game.
GIVE HER, HER CAPE: Vukas was the highlight during game one of the season, and deservedly so. The Bucs put up 14 shots and Vukas recorded 10 saves on the night — the most for her career. Last season, the Lions only recorded one game of double digit saves. Vukas has the Lions in second in the ASUN for saves and she personally sits in second for saves in the conference with a .909 save percentage.
NEW LINEUP: As 18 new players enter the fold, of course a brand-new lineup would be introduced to the 2025 season. Transfers Alana Owens, Charlotte Sobotka, Lilly Ford, Avery Smith and Vukas got starts. Captains Alice Bussey, Molly Parham and Adelyn Speight graced the pitch once again. Defender Gracie Tyrrell and midfielder Gizelle El Assal earned a first game start, while true freshman midfielder Avery Stojakovich notched her first collegiate start and went the full 90 minutes.
A SECOND TIME THROUGH: The University of North Alabama plays its first neutral site game of the season at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Ala. Last season, the Lions hosted Jacksonville State at Joe Davis Stadium which was the first collegiate soccer match held in stadium history. The stadium houses the Huntsville City FC professional soccer team and formerly, the Huntsville Stars minor league baseball team. North Alabama Athletics has utilized the Rocket City as a notable partner to host and play in special events for the football, baseball, softball and cross country teams. Now, the Lions and Gamecocks run it back for the second consecutive year.
NEXT GAME: Following the neutral site square off with Jacksonville State, the Lions get a true road game with UT Martin in Martin, Tenn. on Thursday, August 21 at 7 p.m. North Alabama opened the 2024 season with the Skyhawks and earned the 1-0 win.
