Waineby climbs the ladder to tie for sixth after round two

Lions post fourth-best Division I two-round team total with a 561 score

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (September 8, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team finished day two in a tie for third place at the Golfweek Fall Challenge on Monday at the True Blue Golf Course in Pawleys Island, S.C.

Redshirt freshman Walter Waineby stole the show in the second round as he jumped 10 spots into a tie for sixth. He had a perfect day with 15 pars, two birdies and an eagle. He finished with a four-under, 68 card day.

In round one he had four birdies, but added two bogeys for a 70 score day.

This tournament is three days compared to the typical two, so the Lions only played 18 holes. The Lions finished third but had to climb up from as low as fifth and even saw a high of first for a few holes.

As a team, North Alabama finished five-under on for the second 18 hole day. The Lions now hold a 15-under, 561 scorecard after the two rounds. This is the fourth-best Division I two round team total.

The Lions finished with 18 birdies which places them second among teams in the tournament with 43. Georgia Southern sunk one more than UNA for the second round to finish with 44 total. However, the Lions holed two eagles for the day and now lead the field in that category.

North Alabama has the second-best averages on both par-4s and par-5s after the second round. The 4.66 average on par-5s moves them up one spot from the initial round just behind Tennessee Tech.

Xing Luo tied for 20th after the second round. He posted five birdies as he went on to have a 73 day at one-over. Luo still sits at three-under through his two days.

Junior Andrew Ferworn finished right alongside Luo in 20th with a three-under second day. He found that three-under on the first nine as he sunk two birdies and had the other eagle for the Lions. He posted two more birdies on the back nine but added a few bogeys to finish even through the final nine. In doing so, he flew up the leaderboard 16 spots.

Senior Sebastian Bengtsson dropped down to 32nd for the second day with a one-over day. The Sweden native started a tad slow with a bogey and double through the first three holes. However, he quickly picked up and tapped in six birdies — the most for a Lion in round two.

Jedd Brady had a relatively quiet day as he finished two-over. He delivered 14 pars and a birdie but added three bogeys to break even through the first 36 holes.

Individual participant Blake Henriques had a notable day as he claimed four birdies and added a third eagle from a UNA golfer for the day. He finished in a tie for 11th as he jumped 21 spots in the second round.

Georgia Southern had a slow start through the first six holes as they added two bogeys, two doubles and a triple, which dropped them to fourth at one point. However, they reclaimed the first position with 14 birdies through the back nine. GSU claimed the individual first spot as Harrison Sewell posted a six-under day to claim the lead.

Tennessee Tech took over sole possession of second by one stroke from the Lions. North Alabama and Nevada finished 15-under for a tie in third.

Ball State claimed fifth and Loyola-Chicago sixth. Both teams moved three spots up for the Monday round. Loyola-Chicago's own Charlie Kulwin jetted up 40 spots to tie Waineby for sixth as he shot seven-under with eight birdies.

Mercer and Western Carolina moved down a couple of pegs to tie in seventh with a one-under day. ASUN foe Central Arkansas broke the tie in ninth to standalone. USC Upstate fell three positions to 10th with a two-over day.

East Texas A&M moved up one spot while Presbyterian and Austin Peay round out the field, respectively. The Govs own the reigning ASUN Golfer of the Year in Patton Samuels who sits in 43rd at one-over for the two days.

"There were too many mistakes and a bad ending; we have got to figure some things out for tomorrow.," said The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach, Austin Phillips. "We are still in it but just have to be better. Good play by Walter (Waineby) who went bogey free and is playing really well for his first collegiate start. This team can do it, and I know we have it in us."

UNA continues the tournament tomorrow, Sept. 9 starting at 7:30 a.m. at True Blue Golf Resort. Pairings will be made available later today.
