GARST, NELSON LEAD SOFTBALL TEAM TO SWEEP

FLORENCE – Bailey Nelson hit a walk-off home run in the first game and Megan Garst pitched a no-hitter in the second as the University of North Alabama softball completed a three-game sweep over West Georgia with two wins Sunday afternoon at home. The 8-6 and 5-0 victories give the Lions a 34-4 overall record with a 21-2 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

In the opener, the Lions had to rally after West Georgia scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Alex Brown led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and later scored on an error to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, UNA won the game with a two-out rally. After Brown singled to reach base, Nelson hit her first home run of the season over the left field fence to give the Lions the walk-off win.

North Alabama used three different pitchers with Garst getting the win after facing three batters in the top of the seventh. Laken Distefano started and worked the first 5.1 innings. Brittany Ledbetter also pitched an inning for the Lions.

UNA struck first with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. An RBI-single by Kara Brewer and back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Veronica Westfall and Reagan Tittle gave UNA the 3-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Hannah Shollenberger drove in two runs with a single to left field make the score 5-0 and set the stage for West Georgia's big inning.

Nelson singled twice before her homer and finished the first game 3-for-5 at the plate. Brown and Meleah Hargett added two hits each.

In the second game, Garst picked up where she left off. After striking out the first two batters, the sophomore from Columbiana walked UWG's Mallory Walker to represent the Wolves lone base runner. She then retired the next 19 batters to record the first no-hitter of the season for the UNA pitching staff.

Nelson provided all the offense the Lions would need by hitting her second home run of the day with a two-run shot in the bottom of the third. In the fifth inning, back-to-back RBI-ground outs by Nelson and Hargett gave UNA a 4-0 lead.

The final run of the day came in the bottom of the sixth. After Westfall led off the inning with a triple, she scored on a sacrifice fly by Mackenzie Roberts.

Garst improved to 15-2 with the two wins. In the second game, she struck out eight in seven innings of work.
UNA will play a three-game series at Christian Brothers next weekend. The two teams will play a double-header Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a single game at the same time the following day.
