SOFTBALL LIONS SPLIT WITH LIBERTY

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team kept pace in the ASUN Conference standings with a home split against Liberty on Saturday. After posting a 1-0 win the opener, the Lions came up short 3-1 in the second game to move to 22-18 overall and 7-10 in ASUN play.
 
With four games left in the regular season, UNA remains in fifth place in the league standings. The top six teams qualify for the ASUN Tournament, which begins May 8, in Fort Myers, Fla.
 
Megan Garst picked up a complete-game shutout in the first game. The junior from Columbiana scattered three hits and struck out 10 to improve to 13-5 on the season.
 
The Flames, which entered the day atop the ASUN standings, got a double in the top of the first inning before Garst retired 15 straight batters.
 
UNA got the game's lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Consecutive singles by Jensen Strickland and Danielle de Ruiter led off the frame before a sacrifice bunt by Mackanzie Roberts put runners at second and third. Lexie Harper's fly ball to right field then scored pinch runner Jessie Brown from third to give North Alabama the lead.
 
Liberty got a one-out single and a walk in the top of the seventh before the Lions got out of the jam. Roberts threw out a stolen base attempt and Garst recorded a fly out to end the game.
 
It was the fifth time Garst has reached double figures in strikeouts this season. She has 144 for the season and leads the ASUN with 8.62 strikeouts per seven innings.
 
At the plate, five different UNA players had one hit each.
 
In the second game, Liberty built a 3-0 lead before holding off the Lions down the stretch. The Flames scored twice in the top of the third inning and added another run in the fourth.
 
North Alabama got a single run in the bottom of the fourth and had the tying run on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. The Lions, however, could never find the big hit. UNA stranded 10 base runners in the second contest.
 
Alex Brown reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on an RBI-ground out by McKenna Ray to make the score 3-1. Both teams finished with nine hits each.
 
Harper finished the second game 2-for-3 at the plate, Madison Daniel, Veronica Westfall and Harley Stokes also each went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
 
Strickland (0-4) started and took the pitching loss. Sidney Revels and Laken Distefano also saw time in the circle.
 
The two teams will wrap the three-game ASUN series with a single game at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Prior to the first pitch, the Lions will honors Brown and Roberts as the team's lone seniors.
