UNA SOFTBALL GETS ASUN SWEEP AT LIPSCOMB

NASHVILLE, Tenn., – Two road wins at Lipscomb on Saturday gave the University of North Alabama softball team a 16-4 record on the season and kept the Lions undefeated in ASUN Conference play. The Lions won 4-3 and 8-2 and remained tied for first place in the league standings with a 5-0 record.

In the opener, UNA took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning before holding off a late rally by the Bisons. Lipscomb had three hits in the frame, including a two-run single that made the score 4-3 and put the tying run at second base.

Megan Garst, however, recorded a ground-out to end the game. The senior finished the game with three earned runs off nine hits with seven strikeouts to improve to 7-3 on the season.

A two-run first inning gave UNA a lead it would never lose. After reaching on an error, Lexie Harper reached third on an infield hit by Meleah Hargett before scoring on an RBI-single by Sidney Bevis. A single by Harley Stokes then scored Hargett from third to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Lipscomb cut the lead in half with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning. After plating the run, the Bisons had runners at second and third with two outs. A line drive, however, was caught by a diving Danielle de Ruiter to end the threat.

UNA responded by adding two runs in the top of the fifth. An RBI-single by Emma Broadfoot and a sacrifice fly by Georgia Land put the Lions ahead 4-1.

The lead remained the same until the bottom of the seventh, when three singles pushed two runs across the plate and put the tying run in scoring position.

Hargett went 2-for-4 in the first game. Bevis was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

The second game was highlighted by a pair of UNA home runs. The first came in the top of the fifth inning, when Stokes became the program's all-time leader in the category. Her 32nd career blast broke a three-way tie with Jessica Liddy and Krystal Hand, who each hit 31 career home runs for the Lions.

Broadfoot connected on her second home run of the season with a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning. The blast extended the UNA lead to 8-2 and Sidney Revels retired the side in the bottom of the frame.

Revels improved to 4-0 with the complete-game win. She allowed one earned run with a walk and a strikeout in seven innings of work.

Lipscomb took an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fifth, the Lions got a walk and a single before Hargett connected on a one-out triple off the fence in right field. The hit scored Katie Killen and Danielle de Ruiter and gave UNA a 2-1 lead.

Stokes then came to the plate with one on and two out and homered to left center.

The Bisons made the score 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth before Broadfoot's grand slam wrapped up the scoring. Broadfoot finished the second game 2-for-4 at the plate.

The two teams will complete the three-game series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Draper Diamond on the LU campus in Nashville.
