LION SOFTBALL DROPS TWO GAMES TO KENNESAW STATE

FLORENCE – Kennesaw State hit seven home runs in a two-game ASUN Conference sweep over the University of North Alabama softball team on Saturday. The 3-2 and 7-2 losses give UNA a 16-8 recorrd on the season with a 5-3 mark in league play.

The Owls (11-16 overall, 4-1 ASUN) hit three solo homers in the opener. Three more solo shots and a two-run home run in the second game capped the scoring on the day. The UNA pitching staff entered the day having allowed only eight home runs on the season.

UNA struck first in the opener with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Meleah Hargett doubled to left center before Harley Stokes connected on a two-out double to right center to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

The lead held until the top of the fourth inning when Kennesaw State opened the frame with back-to-back solo homers. It was the first time in her career starter Megan Garst had allowed home runs to consecutive batters.

The Owls extended the lead to 3-1 on another solo shot in the top of the fifth.

UNA answered in the bottom of the fifth with a single run to close the gap. Emma Latham led off the frame with a solo home run to left center. The Lions, however, would not get another hit in the game.

Garst (7-5) took the loss in the circle. She allowed three runs off eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. At the plate, Hargett was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Both teams plated single runs in the first inning of the second game. KSU got a walk, a steal and an RBI-single to represent the only manufactured run of the day for the visitors.

UNA tied the game in the bottom of the inning without recording a hit. After being hit by a pitch, Lexie Harper was sacrificed to second before stealing third base. She scored on Hargett's sacrifice fly to right field.

Two more Kennesaw State home runs gave the Owls the lead for good in the top of the third inning. Brea Dickey and Lexi Solorzano each hit their second homer of the day.

The Lions pulled to within 3-2 in the bottom of the third. After drawing a leadoff walk, Danielle de Ruiter reached second before scoring on an RBI-single by Hargett. The Lions would not get another hit until the seventh inning.

KSU hit two more home runs to extend the lead. A solo shot in the sixth inning and a two-run shot in the seventh inning were sandwiched around a sacrifice fly. The Owls finished the game with a 10-2 advantage in hits.

Sidney Revels started and pitched the first three innings for UNA. She suffered her first loss on the season, falling to 4-1 after allowing three runs off five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Olivia DePew also pitched four innings, giving up four runs off five hits.

The same two teams are scheduled to wrap up the three-game series with a single game Sunday at noon.
