LIONS OPEN ASUN SOFTBALL TOURNEY WITH 6-3 WIN OVER JAX STATE

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – Emma Broadfoot's three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the University of North Alabama softball team to a 6-3 win over Jacksonville State Wednesday to open play in the ASUN Conference Tournament. The blasted put the Lions (38-16) into the second round to face top-seeded Liberty on Thursday. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. on the campus of North Florida.

Against the Gamecocks, UNA faced 2-1 and 3-2 deficits before rallying each time.

The Lions struck first with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Lexie Harper led off the frame with a single and reached third before scoring on a passed ball.

The Gamecocks responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second. A UNA fielding error and a two-run home run gave JSU the 2-1 lead.

North Alabama tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases with no outs, UNA managed only a single run when a sacrifice fly by Sidney Bevis scored Meleah Hargett from third.

JSU, however, regained a one-run lead in the top of the fifth. After a leadoff triple, an RBI-double to right center gave the Gamecocks a 3-2 advantage.

Home runs by the Lions wrapped up the scoring on the day. In the bottom of the fifth, a solo shot by Harley Stokes tied the game. It was the 50th career homer by the fifth-year senior from Demopolis.

UNA left the go-ahead run in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings before Broadfoot came to the plate with one out and two on in the bottom of the seventh. She launched a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence to give the Lions the walk-off victory.

Stokes finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate. Harper and Haven Kirby each had 2-for-3 showings.

Maci Birdyshaw outlasted two JSU pitchers to record the complete-game win in the circle. She worked all seven innings and struck out five to improve to 18-3 on the year.
