SOFTBALL FALLS TWICE TO BOW OUT OF ASUN TOURNAMENT

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – A pair of losses against the top two seeds in the ASUN Conference Tournament eliminated the University of North Alabama softball team Thursday in Jacksonville, Fla. A 6-4 loss against top-seeded Liberty and a 7-3 loss to No. 2 Central Arkansas sent the Lions home with a 1-2 record at the event.
 
UNA (38-18) will now wait to see if it gets an at-large bid to any other post-season events.
 
In the opener, Liberty overcame an early 1-0 deficit by scoring six unanswered runs before holding off the Lions in the top of the seventh. UNA entered the final frame trailing 6-1, but managed to get the tying run in scoring position before falling in the end.
 
A bases-loaded walk by Georgia Land and a two-run single by Emma Broadfoot cut the deficit to 6-4 and force a Liberty Pitching change. An infield popup with the bases loaded then ended the game to keep the top seed in the winner's bracket.
 
Lexie Harper led off the game with a single and advanced to third on two ground balls by the Lions. She scored on a Liberty error to give the Lions the early 1-0 lead.
 
The Flames tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the first inning before taking the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third.
 
A three-run sixth inning provided key insurance runs for Liberty. The Flames took advantage of a UNA error and scored three runs off three hits to briefly take a 6-1 lead.
 
In the bottom of the frame, the Lions loaded the bases with one out before coming up short in the end.
 
UNA finished the game with eight hits. Harper was 2-for-3 at the plate. Maci Birdyshaw started and worked the first three innings before taking the loss in the circle. She fell to 18-4 on the season.
 
The game against Central Arkansas featured three lead changes. After the Bears struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, UNA responded with three runs of its own in the top of the second to grab a 3-2 lead.
 
UCA, however, answered with five straight runs to take control.
 
UNA strung together three hits to make its move in the top of the second. After Land drew a leadoff walk, consecutive singles by Broadfoot and Harley Stokes loaded the bases with no outs.
 
Following a strikeout, Brooke Burback drove in two runs with a single to right center. Broadfoot later scored from third on a deep sacrifice fly by Haven Kirby to give the Lions a 3-2 lead.
 
Central Arkansas regained the lead with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. Two more runs in the fourth extended the lead to 7-3.
 
UNA was held to three hits, with all three coming in the second inning. Sidney Revels(6-5)  took the pitching loss after working three innings in relief.
