LIONS HIT SEVEN HOMERS IN NISC OPENER, TOP TARLETON 18-15

FORT COLLINS, Colo., – The University of North Alabama softball team pounded out 18 runs off 18 hits, including seven home runs Saturday to open play at the National Invitational Softball Championship with an 18-15 win over Tarleton State. The win gives UNA a 39-18 record and keeps the Lions in the winner's bracket to face UNLV at 5 p.m. (CST) on Sunday.

The win was the 100th Division I victory for the UNA softball program.

Against Tarleton, UNA was on the verge of falling via the eight-run mercy rule before its bats came alive. The Texans jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held an 11-2 advantage after the top of the third inning. The Lions responded with 16 unanswered runs to take control.

UNA got back in the game by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs in the bottom of the third. Georgia Land started the rally with a three-run home run. Harley Stokes, who also homered in the second inning, followed with another solo shot in the third to make the score 11-6.

The Lions then loaded the bases with one out before Haven Kirby drew a walk to score a run and Taylor Brown hit a sacrifice fly to pull UNA to within three runs at 11-8.

Following a Tarleton scoreless frame in the top of the fourth, UNA took its first lead of the game with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. All eight runs came via the long ball as the Lions connected on four home runs in the frame. A three-run shot by Emma Broadfoot tied the game at 11-11. Meleah Hargett then followed with a solo blast to give UNA a 12-11 lead.

Two batters later, Haven Kirby hit a two-run homer to left field. Hailey Jones then wrapped up the scoring in the inning with a two-run home run to center to put the Lions ahead 16-11.

After avoiding the mercy-rule defeat, UNA was in position to win via the mercy-rule after plating two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly by Brooke Burback was followed by an RBI-triple by Kirby to put the potential winning run at third base with two outs.

The Lions, however, left the runner stranded with the 18-11 lead. Tarleton added two-run home runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to wrap up the scoring on the day.

Tarleton finished the game with 15 runs off 17 hits and hit six homers.

Six players had multiple hits for the Lions. Broadfoot and Kirby each went 3-for-3 and combined for eight RBI. Kirby drove in five runs while Broadfoot had three on the day. Jones was also 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Stokes, Hargett and Burback added two hits each.

Sophie Golliver was the third UNA pitcher to see action and got the victory in the circle after working five innings. She allowed four runs off seven hits to improve to 8-3 on the season.
