LIONS FALL TO UNLV IN NISC QUARTERFINALS

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – UNLV overcame a 1-0 deficit by plating a single run in the top of the fifth inning, then scoring twice in the sixth to claim a 3-1 victory over North Alabama in an elimination game of the National Invitational Softball Championship. The win sent the Rebels to the semi-final round, while UNA ends its 2022 season with a 40-20 record.
 
After averaging almost 12 runs per game in the first three NISC contests, the Lions were held to a single run off three hits by UNLV starter Jenny Bressler. Harley Stokes drove in the lone run for UNA with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning. The blast gave her 19 homers on the year to tie a program single-season record.
 
UNLV (42-14) tied the game with a solo homer by Janyssa Martin in the fifth inning. A two-run single by Denise Armendariz in the top of the sixth gave the Rebels the lead for good. UNA did not get a hit over the final three innings as Bressler retired 10 consecutive batters to end the game.
 
The Rebels, who advanced to the game by defeating Tarleton State on Tuesday, avenged a 9-5 loss to UNA in the second round.
 
Stokes, who had a hit in every game at the NISC, including four home runs, added a single to finish the day 2-for-3 at the plate. Meleah Hargett had the other hit for the Lions with a single in the third inning.
 
Elena Escobar (3-5) took the pitching loss after starting and working the first five innings. She allowed three runs off seven hits with six strikeouts.
