LION TENNIS SWEEPS CBU TO OPEN GSC PLAY

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's and women's tennis teams opened Gulf South Conference play at home on Sunday by defeating Christian Brothers by identical 9-0 scores. The win gives the UNA women a 2-1 record on the season with a 1-0 start to league play while the men's team evens its overall record at 2-2 and 1-0 in GSC action.

The women's team was able to get off to a fast start by winning all three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. The Lions wasted little time clinching the match in singles play. A 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles by Nina Linke gave UNA a 4-0 lead.

Olivera Ngouabeu then secured the win for UNA with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory at the top spot. The Lions followed with straight-sets wins in the final four positions to complete the sweep.

The men's match featured a similar script as North Alabama swept doubles play the take the early lead. Identical 8-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles was followed by an 8-6 victory by Ray Donovan and Gustavo Girao at the No. 2 doubles position.

A pair of 6-2, 6-1 victories at the top two singles positions secured the overall win for the Lions. Max Druppel was first off the court at No. 2, followed by Miguel Garcia at the top spot. North Alabama wrapped up play with straight-sets win in three of the final four singles positions.

"It's always good to get the first conference win of the season," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "Christian Brothers has really improved. I liked the way we competed today."

The UNA women will return to action next Sunday with another GSC home match against West Georgia. Both Lion tennis teams will then host Delta State on Friday, March 3.
