WOMEN’S TENNIS DOWNS CBU FOR THRID STRAIGHT WIN

MEMPHIS, Tenn., – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team took a 2-1 lead into singles play and swept its way to an 8-1 victory against Christian Brothers on Wednesday. The third straight victory gives the Lions a 6-4 overall record with a 5-2 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

UNA jumped out early with solid wins in the top two doubles spots. Claire DeGeorge and Alisa Savina quickly posted an 8-0 win at No. 3 before Nina Linke and Nele Seitz gave the Lions a 2-0 leady by winning 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. The Bucs were able to get on the scoreboard with a 9-7 victory at the top doubles position.

North Alabama was even more dominant in singles play. Freshman Elise Sickle needed little time in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 spot. Savina was next, winning by the same score at No. 6. DeGeorge had a little trouble in the first set before sailing through the second set in a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles and clinch the match for the Lions.

Claudia Arroyo won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1, Linke 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Donna Haycock 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 to wrap up the scoring on the day.

"This was another solid win by these ladies," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "They were very businesslike. Everyone contributed in a solid team win. You have to give CBU and coach Garnett credit. They had tremendous energy at No. 1 doubles and it proved to be enough."

After winning three straight GSC road matches, UNA will return home to face Lee on March 18. Match time is set for 9 a.m. at the UNA Tennis Complex.
