UNA SOFTBALL SWEEPS BELLARMINE TO OPEN ASUN PLAY

FLORENCE – North Alabama pitchers Megan Garst and Sidney Revels combined to toss 13 scoreless innings, holding Bellarmine to two hits during a 2-0, 3-1 home sweep on Saturday. The two wins give the UNA softball team a 12-4 overall record, along with a 2-0 mark to open ASUN Conference play.

In the opener, Garst recorded her 17th career shutout and fourth no-hitter. She struck out 11 batters and allowed only two walks in the complete-game effort.

At the plate, the Lions got single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. Back-to-back doubles by Sidney Bevis and Meleah Hargett gave UNA the early lead.

Emma Latham led off the second inning with a single to left center. After the Lions got two outs, Kalli Daniel drove home the run with an RBI-double to give UNA the 2-0 lead. Five different North Alabama players had one hit each.

Carson Goatley took the pitching loss for Bellarmine. She scattered five hits over six innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Both runs were earned.

Garst surrendered a walk in the top of the fourth inning before retiring the next 11 batters to get the win and improve to 5-3 on the season. In her last three starts in ASUN play, the senior from Columbiana has three consecutive no-hitters dating back to the end of the 2019 regular season. Garst no-hit Liberty and Jacksonville to wrap up ASUN play.

In the nightcap, Revels took a 3-0 lead and a one-hitter into the seventh inning before a leadoff home run broke up the shutout. Goatley's solo home run to center provided the first run of the day for the Knights. Revels, however, recovered by recording three straight outs to end the game.

North Alabama again used a fast start to grab an early lead. A two-out rally in the bottom of the first inning started the scoring. Hargett singled and stole second base. She scored on Emma Latham's RBI-single to left center.

Daniel led off the bottom of the second with a walk. She was sacrificed to second before reaching third on a wild pitch. She later scored on Daniel de Ruiter's RBI-ground out to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Harley Stokes wrapped up the scoring on the day with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Four different UNA players finished the game with one hit each.

Revels improved to 3-0 with the complete-game victory. She struck out three batters without allowing a walk. Megan Murphy (1-3) took the loss for Bellarmine.

UNA will host Bellarmine Sunday at noon in a single game to complete the three-game ASUN series.
