SOFTBALL LIONS 10-3 AFTER ALABAMA STATE SWEEP

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team scored 23 runs off 18 hits Saturday in a double-header sweep over Alabama State. The Lions won the opener 7-0 before getting a 16-2 mercy-rule victory in the second game to improve to 10-3 on the season.

Meleah Hargett was 3-for-4 with five RBI on the day. Harley Stokes also homered twice and drove in five runs of her own. UNA also used four different pitchers to limit the Hornets to 11 scoreless innings.

In the opener, North Alabama managed 10 hits, but stranded 10 baserunners. Stokes started the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. The Lions added another run on a groundout to take a 2-0 lead.

A two-run double by Hargett in the fourth and a solo home run by Georgia Land in the fifth extended the lead to 5-0. The Lions took advantage of a pair of ASUN errors to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to wrap up the scoring.

Hargett was 2-for-2 at the plate. Emma Broadfoot and Kalli Daniel each went 2-for-3 while Land added a single in the second inning to finish 2-for4 in the opener. Sidney Revels (2-0) got the pitching win, scattering three hits over the first six innings.

In the second game, the Lions exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning. UNA sent 17 batters to the plate and took advantage of four walks, two passed balls, two wild pitches, two errors and a hit batter.

A three-run triple by Hargett and a three-run home run by Stokes highlighted the frame. In the bottom of the second, UNA scored on another error, got a sacrifice fly by Taylor Brown and a two-run single by Sidney Edwards.

Maci Birdyshaw (3-1) worked the first two innings to get the win. Olivia DePew pitched the final three frames in relief.

At the plate, seven different players recorded a hit. Danielle de Ruiter was the only UNA player with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 in the second game.

UNA will play at UAB on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Birmingham.
