SOFTBALL LIONS OPEN SEASON 1-1 AT SOUTHERN MISS INVITE

HATTISBURG, Miss., – The University of North Alabama softball team opened the 2022 season Friday with a 1-1 showing and the Southern Mississippi Black and Gold Invitational. The Lions rallied to knock off Samford 5-4 in the season opener before falling 8-6 to the host Gold Eagles in the nightcap.

The two games featured seven lead changes, including four in the nine-inning opener.

Against Samford, Georgia Land hit an RBI-single in the top of the ninth inning to give UNA a 5-4 lead. The Lions then got out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the frame to get the win.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs got a runner placed at second base via the international tiebreaker rule. A walk and bunt-single then loaded the bases. UNA's Maci Birdyshaw, however, recorded fly outs to first base, centerfield and shortstop to end the game.

Samford struck first with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. Following a two-out double, Samford took a 1-0 lead on a UNA throwing error.

The score remained the same until the sixth inning when Harley Stokes connected on a 1-0 pitch for a three-run home run to centerfield. The blast gave the Lions a 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs were able to regain the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. After a solo homer cut the deficit to 3-2, Samford got a two-run single to take a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, Hailey Jones reached on an error to lead off the frame for the Lions. UNA was down to its final out when she scored from third on an RBI-single by Lexie Harper.

Neither team scored in the eighth inning to set up UNA's game-winner in the ninth. Emma Broadfoot was placed on second base to start the stanza. After a pop-up, Land hit the first pitch to left field for the go-ahead score.

For the game, the Lions had 10 hits. Meleah Hargett was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Land and Broadfoot also each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Birdyshaw (1-0) was one of four UNA pitchers to see action. She got the win in the circle. She allowed one hit over the final two scoreless innings with a strikeout.

Against Southern Miss, UNA had to rally from an early five-run deficit. The Golden Eagles sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning and used three home runs to grab a 5-0 lead.

The Lions were able to cut into the deficit with three runs in the top of the fourth. Hargett and Sidney Bevis led off the inning with back-to-back singles and later scored on a USM error. An RBI-single by Broadfoot then scored Stokes from third to make the score 5-3.

Another three-run showing in the fifth inning gave North Alabama a 6-5 lead. With one out and the bases loaded, a three-run double by Stokes put the Lions ahead. UNA, however, would not score again while the Golden Eagles rallied.

Southern Miss regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The home team then added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Haven Kirby was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Stokes was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Megan Warhurst (0-1) took the pitching loss for UNA.

North Alabama will play Southern Miss again on Saturday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. The Lions will then take on Saint Louis at 7 p.m.
