UNA SOFTBALL TOPS SOUTHERN MISS, SAINT LOUIS

HATTISBURG, Miss., – The University of North Alabama softball team picked up a pair of wins on the second day of the Southern Mississippi Black and Gold Invitational. The Lions knocked off the host Golden Eagles 7-0 before getting a 6-2 victory over Saint Louis in eight innings. With the two victories, UNA improves to 3-1 on the season.
 
At the plate, the UNA bats came alive for 13 runs off 23 hits while pitchers Sidney Revels and Macie Birdyshaw combined to toss 15 innings without yielding an earned run.
 
Against Southern Miss, Revels (1-0) surrendered just three hits in the complete-game shutout. The senior from Bonifay, Fla., struck out six and did not give up a walk in seven innings of work.
 
At the plate, the Lions used a five-run third inning to take control. After a sacrifice fly by Georgia Land gave UNA a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, North Alabama sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the third.
 
The Lions got another sacrifice fly by Hailey Jones, an RBI-single by Meleah Hargett, an RBI-double by Harley Stokes and two run-scoring singles by Emma Broadfoot and Kalli Daniel to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
 
Daniel added an RBI-groundout in the top of the fifth to account for the final score.
 
UNA finished with 10 hits in the game. Haven Kirby was 2-for-2 at the plate. Broadfoot finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Hargett was also 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
 
The nightcap was scoreless for the first five innings. In the top of the sixth, Hargett drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Broadfoot's double down the right line.
 
Saint Louis answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning. Following a pair of UNA errors, the Billikens got an RBI-single with two outs to tie the score at 1-1.
 
After a scoreless seventh inning, UNA broke the game open in the top of the eighth. Lexie Harper was placed on second base to start the frame and the Lions sent nine batters to the plate, scoring five runs off six hits.
 
An RBI-single by Jones started the scoring. Land and Sidney Bevis also drove in runs to give the Lions a 4-1 lead. Kirby wrapped up the scoring with a two-run double to left field.
 
Eight different UNA players had at least one hit in the game. Daniel was 3-for-4 while Jones, Land and Kirby added two hits each.
 
Birdyshaw improved to 2-0 with the pitching win. She worked all eight innings, striking out a career-high 13 batters and scattering three hits. Both Saint Louis runs were unearned.
 
UNA will wrap up play at the event with another game against Saint Louis on Sunday. First pitch for the single game is set for 10 a.m. at the USM Softball Complex.
