LIONS SOFTBALL GETS TWO WINS OVER JACKSONVILLE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team picked up a pair of ASUN Conference wins over Jacksonville on Sunday, sweeping the Dolphins 9-7 and 9-6 at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Complex. The two wins give UNA a 24-10 record on the season, including a 3-5 mark in league action.

In the opener, the Lions needed a walk-off home run by Harley Stokes in the bottom of the seventh inning after losing a seven-run lead. UNA entered the top of the frame ahead 7-0 before the visitors rallied.

Jacksonville sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring seven runs off five hits to tie the game. Hailey Jones led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. After two outs, Stokes connected on a 2-2 pitch for the two-run shot to right field. It was the third walk-off victory of the season for the Lions.

UNA built the 7-0 lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and three in the fifth. An RBI-single by Stokes was followed by a three-run home run by Meleah Hargett. In the fifth inning, Katie Killen walked and Lexie Harper singled before Emma Broadfoot connected on a three-run homer of her own.

Stokes finished the first game 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Harper also went 2-for-3 while Broadfoot drove in three runs to go with her 2-for-4 showing.

Maci Birdyshaw started and worked six scoreless innings for the Lions. She struck out six batters against a Jacksonville team that has the fewest strikeouts in the ASUN. She lost the decision, however, when she was relieved in the top of the seventh after the Dolphins tied the game.

Megan Warhurst (3-1) threw six pitches and recorded the final out to get the win in relief.

The second game featured a similar script as UNA took a 9-3 lead into the top of the seventh inning. Jacksonville scored three times in the frame but could get no closer.

UNA managed to score nine runs off just five hits. In the bottom of the first inning, Jones drew a two-out walk before scoring on an RBI-double by Broadfoot.

A three-run third inning extended the UNA lead. The Lions took advantage of a trio of JU errors to go ahead 4-0.

Jacksonville (11-17 overall, 5-3 ASUN) scored three times in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to a single run. The Lions, however, answered again in the bottom of the frame.

After three straight walks loaded the bases, Broadfoot doubled to left center to score two runs. Jones reached third before scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 7-3. Georgia Land then drove in two runs on a deep sacrifice fly to center field. A collision in the outfield following the catch allowed Broadfoot to score from third and Stokes to score from second and give North Alabama a 9-3 lead.

Elena Escobar started and worked the first four innings for the Lions. She allowed three runs off seven hits. Sidney Revels pitched the final three innings, allowing three runs off four hits.

Broadfoot was 3-for-4 with four RBI in the second game. She finished the day 5-of-8 at the plate and drove in seven runs. Harper also went 2-for-3 in the nighcap.

The two teams will complete the three-game ASUN series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
