LION SOFTBALL SWEEPS TWIN BILL OVER JACKSONVILLE STATE

JACKSONVILLE – Harley Stokes hit three home runs and the University of North Alabama softball team got complete-game efforts in the circle from Maci Birdyshaw and Elena Escobar Saturday as the Lions swept a pair of ASUN Conference games at Jacksonville State. The 9-3 and 7-2 victories gives UNA a 32-12 record on the season and puts the team in a tie for first place in the ASUN West Division with a 11-6 league record.

In the opener, UNA hit two grand slams to rally for the win. The Lions entered the top of the sixth inning without a hit before a two-out single up the middle by Hailey Jones started the comeback.  Emma Broadfoot was then hit by a pitch and Georgia Land walked to load the bases for Stokes, who launched her sixth career grand slam to left field.

After the four-run shot put UNA ahead 4-3, JSU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame. Birdyshaw, however, pitched out of the jam to keep the lead for the Lions.

In the top of the seventh, North Alabama again loaded the bases with a single, a hit batter and a walk to bring Broadfoot to the plate with one out. The sophomore hit a shot to right field to give the Lions an 8-3 lead.

Following a single and consecutive JSU errors, UNA added another unearned run to make the score 9-3. The Gamecocks could not answer in the bottom of the seventh.

UNA managed only five hits in the opener. Jones, Lexie Harper and Meleah Hargett also singled. Birdyshaw improved to 15-2 with the pitching win. She allowed three solo homers and struck out three without yielding a walk.

In the second game, the UNA bats picked up where they left off at the end of the first. The Lions scored seven runs off 10 hits, including three more home runs.

A solo shot by Stokes opened the scoring for UNA in the top of the second inning. The Lions got runners on second and third with two outs before a two-run single by Harper increased the lead to 3-0.

In the top of the third, another two-out rally increased the North Alabama lead. Land drew a walk and later scored on an RBI-triple by Stokes. Hargett then doubled to drive in another run and give the Lions a 5-0 lead.

Single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings put the game out of reach. Haven Kirby led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run. Stokes then hit her third homer of the day in the fifth with a two-out solo shot to right field. The fifth-year senior now has 46 career home runs to increase her all-time lead for the Lions.

Escobar took a shutout into the bottom of the seventh inning. JSU led off the frame with a double and a two-run home run to cut the lead to 7-2. A groundout and two lineouts, however, ended the game.

Stokes was 3-for-3 in the second game with a trio of RBI. She now leads the ASUN with 44 runs driven in on the year. Hargett and Harper also each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Escobar worked all seven innings to improve to 2-2 on the season. She scattered six hits, allowed two runs and struck out five batters.

Harper also put her name into the UNA record book. The senior was 2-for-2 in stolen-base attempts, giving her a school record 53 for her career. She passes Bailey Nelson, who stole 52 bases from 2015-18.

UNA and Jacksonville State will wrap up the three-game ASUN series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at University Field on the JSU campus.
