SOFTBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE AT JSU

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State scored 11 runs off 16 hits Sunday in an 11-5 win over the University of North Alabama softball team. The win salvaged the series for the Gamecocks after UNA won the first two games. UNA falls to 32-13 overall and drops back into second place in the ASUN West Division with an 11-7 league record.

On Sunday, the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie after the first two innings. JSU then took control by scoring six runs over the next three frames. The home team scored four times in the bottom of the third and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Gamecocks led 9-5 when a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach.

UNA managed nine hits on the day but left six runners on base. An RBI-double by Hailey Jones opened the scoring on the day and gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

After JSU grabbed a 3-1 lead, the Lions got a single by Meleah Hargett and a two-run home run by Taylor Brown to tie the game in the top of the second.

The Gamecocks sent nine batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring four runs to go ahead 7-3. After an RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth inning extended the lead to 8-3, the Lions answered in the top of the fifth. Solo home run by Jones and Georgia Land cut the deficit to 8-5 but UNA would not score again.

JSU added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning before the two-run homer in the sixth wrapped up the scoring on the day.

Jones finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Brown was also 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Five different UNA pitchers saw action in the circle. Sophie Golliver took the loss to fall to 6-3 on the year.

UNA will play a single game at Samford on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. in Birmingham.
