Women’s Tennis set for dual against UAB

Lions travel to Birmingham for in-state clash

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (February 12, 2024) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team is back in action for their fourth dual of the season against the UAB Blazers in the Birmingham area on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.

North Alabama faces UAB after its home dual against Jacksonville State was rescheduled to March 8 due to inclement weather. The Lions are coming off a home-opening 6-1 win against Tennessee State in their last outing on Feb. 3. UNA won all but one match in the dual, moving UNA to a 2-1 record this season.

The dual will take place at the Hoover Met in Hoover, Ala. Final results and box scores will be posted on RoarLions.com at the conclusion of the event.

North Alabama at UAB

SCOUTING THE LIONS: North Alabama improved to 2-1 after their last outing against the Tennessee State Tigers. The Lions have been a threat in doubles with a 6-1 combined record through three duals. Senior Kalais Going, senior Marta Torres, sophomore Stanislava Bobrovnikova and freshman Ada Karabacak are all undefeated in doubles play, with Going leading with a 3-0 record. Torres, Bobrovnikova and freshman Emma Ansorge have won two singles matches over three meets.

SCOUTING THE BLAZERS: UAB enters the match against the Lions with a 1-6 record, including an 0-1 record at home. Last time out, the Blazers were defeated 7-0 by Florida State on Feb. 10. Dating back to the fall season, the Blazers have two players tied for a team-high 10 singles victories — graduate Adela Wasserbauerova and junior Mackenzie White — while White and junior Vanessa Mellynchuk leads for UAB with 10 doubles wins. The head coach for UAB is Mark Tjia, coaching in his 10th season.

SERIES HISTORY: The Lions and Blazers have met on the court five times since UNA has moved to Division I, with North Alabama still in search of their first win since the transition. Last time the two teams met was on Feb. 8, 2023, where the Blazers defeated the Lions 4-1 in Florence. UNA will be looking for the its first win over UAB since 1991, when the Lions defeated the Blazers by a 5-4 final while a member of Division II.

FALL RECAP: UNA Women's Tennis ended the fall portion of the season with 78 wins in four outings. This includes 17 wins in the final meet at Southern Miss, led by Karabacak with six wins and a singles flight victory. She and Going won their doubles flight, as well.
