UNA SPLITS OPENING DAY OF RIVER CITY CLASSIC

VICKSBURG, Miss., - The University of North Alabama softball team went 1-1 on the opening day of the River City Classic Friday in Vicksburg, Miss., falling to Eastern Illinois 5-3 before recording a 9-1 mercy-rule win over Alabama A&M. The split gives UNA a 5-2 record on the season.
 
In the opener, the UNA pitching staff surrendered four home runs as Eastern Illinois jumped out to a 5-1 lead and held on for the victory. Back-to-back home runs in the second inning put EIU ahead 3-0. Another solo blast in the third extended the Panthers' lead to four runs.
 
The two teams traded scores in the fifth and sixth innings. Sidney Bevis led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Kalli Daniel. EIU answered in the top of the sixth with its fourth home run of the day to regain a 5-1 advantage.
 
The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning and left the tying run at the plate. Bevis scored again on an RBI-triple by Daniel. Georgia Land then singled home Daniel to make the score 5-3 with one out. A flyout and a strikeout, however, ended the rally.
 
UNA was held to five hits. Sidney Revels took the pitching loss after starting and working the first 1.2 innings in the circle.
 
Against Alabama A&M, the Lions scored early and often. Lexie Harper led off the game with a bunt single and later scored from third on a wild pitch. Harper and Haven Kirby each drove in runs in the second inning to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
 
A three-run third inning extended the North Alabama lead to 6-0. Bevis led off the frame with a triple. She later scored on a ground ball by Hailey Jones. Brooke Burback then connected on a two-run single with two outs.
 
The Bulldogs plated a run in the bottom of the fourth inning before UNA added to its lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Krysten Darrough singled home the first run. She reached third base and later scored on a wild pitch to give UNA an 8-1 lead.
 
A single run in the top of the sixth inning put the eight-run mercy rule in effect for the Lions. Riley Grace Honeycutt led off the frame with a single. She reached third before scoring on an RBI-groundout by Mary Grayson Kilpatrick.
 
Harper and Bevis combined to go 5-of-7 at the top of the lineup for UNA. Harper was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Bevis went 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
Sophie Golliver started and worked the first three innings in the circle to get the pitching victory. The sophomore from Murfreesboro, Tenn., allowed two hit and had four strikeouts to imoprove to 2-0 on the year.
 
UNA will face Jackson State Saturday at 11:30 a.m. before facing Alabama A&M again at 2 p.m.
